As a Louisville Kentucky native and a small business owner, I like to keep track of the fun things to do in and around the city. Here are my top 5 things to do in Louisville KY for adults. THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN LOUISVILLE KY
1. Churchill Downs
When most people think of Kentucky, they think of horse racing, so whether you’re a local or a tourist, you’ve got to check out Churchill Downs. There you can catch a few races, grab a drink, and place your bets on your favorite horse! Even if you’re not into betting on the ponies, the track is full of history and is absolutely beautiful; while you’re there be sure to check out the Kentucky Derby Museum right on the grounds. Spring is obviously the best time to check out the track, and if you’re able, try to attend Thurby, the Oaks, or the Kentucky Derby that first weekend in May. Louisville horse racing has a rich tradition and whether you’re new to Louisville or a native Louisvillian, you’re sure to have a blast at the track!
2. Whiskey Row- Downtown Louisville
Another thing that is synonymous with Kentucky is its bourbon, and downtown Louisville’s Whiskey Row boasts a whole street full of historic bourbon brands and trendy restaurants to enjoy. Check out brands such as Old Forester where you can actually tour the distillery to learn the history. See how the bourbon is made as well as sample the finished product. Finish up with a delicious meal at restaurants like Repeal Oak-Fired Steakhouse and many more.
3. Muhammad Ali Center
If you’re into sports, you can check out the Muhammad Ali Center while you’re in downtown Louisville. The center has various videos and exhibits going over the life and career of famous boxer (and Louisville native) Muhammad Ali. The center also boasts a beautiful event space which hosts corporate events and even weddings.
4. Waterfront Park
If you’re looking for nice city views and a scenic place to take a walk, check out Waterfront Park at the edge of the Ohio River. Waterfront Park has several side walks, benches, and areas to enjoy the city scape of Louisville. There’s usually always something going on at the park from concerts, to 5k runs, and other non-profit events.
5. Louisville Mega Cavern
For the more adventurous, the Louisville Mega Cavern is a great option to explore one of the largest caverns in the United States. Located under the Louisville Zoo, the mega cavern hosts walking tours and even ziplining. Incidentally, I have actually tried the ziplining in the cavern, it’s a bit scary zipping through the dark cavern but its a total adrenaline rush! Also, the Mega Cavern is a great attraction during the holidays as they decorate the entire cavern with lights and you can drive through, its beautiful!
